Another China (1992)

By the time I finished my law degree in UK, I knew I wanted to be an artist, a photographer specifically, but I had no idea how to “be” one. Upon graduation in ‘91, aged 22, armed with travel grants, vaccinations and introduction letters from friends, I embarked on an 11-week solo photography trip to China, a country I was very curious about after three years in England. China had “opened” only a few years before, so the curiosity was mutual. I didn’t have formal training in photography, but like my heroes, I shot with black and white film. When I returned to Singapore, I consolidated the photos into a slide show called “Another China” which narrated over to different organisations in Singapore. I recently discovered the 2000+ negatives of that trip. The were shot with 28mm and 50mm lenses on Ilford film.
