Another China is a photographic survey of China in 1991, captured by a young and curious Singaporean Chinese photographer visiting her ancestral land for the first time.

"Upon completing my law degree in the UK, I knew I wanted to be an artist—specifically, a photographer—but I had little idea how to become one. After graduating in 1991 at the age of 22, I embarked on an 11-week solo photography trip to China. Armed with vaccination certificates and letters of introduction from friends, I set out to explore a country I had grown intensely curious about after three years in England. China had 'opened' to the world only a few years earlier, and the curiosity between myself and those I photographed was mutual.

Though I had no formal training in photography, I followed the lead of my heroes and shot exclusively on black-and-white 35mm film. After returning to Singapore, I consolidated the images into a travelling slide show titled Another China, which I presented to various organisations and groups. The photographs were shot using 28mm and 50mm lenses on a Contax MT167, loaded with Ilford HP5 400 film and with a Nikon FM2 carried as a backup. I recently rediscovered the over 2,000 negatives from that journey."

The negatives were converted into positives for the slide show with the assistance of Nicholas Leong.
