Friends, Family & Strangers

Friends, Family and Strangers: Singapore Urbanscapes
A Solo Photography Exhibition by Tan Pin Pin
8 – 14 February 1993

Friends, Family & Strangers is a document of Singapore life taken from a young person's perspective. The photographs are not the clean, colourfully vibrant profiles of the city as seen in so many coffee table books; nor are they suffused with the quaint nostalgia of many photographers. They share little with the photographs of our newspapers, other than the stark black and white medium.

Working in the familiar world of the MRT, Chinese New Year celebrations, weddings, community centres and Orchard Road, Tan Pin Pin gives us new images and meanings. Through the series of photographs, she examines the themes of the family, city living and youth.
