Artist Debbie Ding investigates a series of enigmatic graffiti figures—a man, a woman, and numbers—repeatedly scribbled in the stairwell of the now-demolished Pearl Centre (home to Yangtze Cinema) in Chinatown. Commissioned for the Singapore Memory Project (2012), this short film explores the graffiti not merely as vandalism, but as a cryptic form of communication, personal memorialization, and urban folklore. Ding’s documentation raises questions about the anonymous "Yangtze Scribbler's" intent and follows the trail of similar unrelated markings found elsewhere in the city, which Debbie also documents. The work serves as a preserved record of a vernacular artefact lost to urban renewal, as Pearl Centre was acquired and demolished in 2016 for the Thomson-East Coast MRT Line.
