walk walk (installation)
walk walk 走走 (2023) is a public artwork commissioned by the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) for The Everyday Museum. Sited at the Kampong Bahru Bus Terminal (KBBT) in the Spottiswoode Park neighborhood, this installation marks the first public art commission for a bus terminal in Singapore.
The work transforms a working bus terminal, an important node in the public transport system into a space for reflecting on the act of walking. It explores walking's connection to freedom and how the simple gesture of putting one step in front of the other can literally and figuratively create space.
The Installation
The artwork comprises three interrelated parts:
A 27-minute video: Titled walk walk (Singapore Deviation version), this documentary profiles several Singaporean women discussing the role of walking in their lives. It screens in a dedicated micro-cinema onsite, repurposed from an unused ticket office.
Two text works: These include word-sculptures installed in the bus drivers’ canteen (NTWU Cafeteria) and the terminal boarding hall.
In the canteen, the Chinese characters “慢慢走” (walk slowly) offer well wishes to bus captains.
Lines of text on the terminal's ceiling beams echo the rhythm of measured footsteps as commuters pass through.
Visitor Information
The work is on show until July 2026. Admission is free.
